L-ospitalità u l-barrani

Dan l-aħħar iltqajt mal-istorja ta’ Najib Nasary, refuġjat mill-Afganistan li ħalla art twelidu biex ifittex bidu ġdid fi Franza. Ma kellu xejn, ma kien jaf lil ħadd, u ffaċċja t-theddida ta’ deportazzjoni. Imma meta n-nies ta’ raħal fil-muntanji Cévennes ta’ Franza laqgħuh, fl-aħħar sab dar ġdida u skopra fih ukoll passjoni ġdida għall-ħajja.

It-triq ma kinetx facli ghal Najib. Wara li wasal Franza, Najib iffaċċja ħafna sfidi hekk kif ipprova jibni ħajja ġdida għalih innifsu f’pajjiż barrani… Kompli aqra »

In-numri u r-reżistenza għall-bidla

“Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it. Obsession with a consumerist lifestyle, above all when few people are capable of maintaining it, can only lead to violence and mutual destruction.”

(Pope Francis, LS. 23. 204)

Id-djalogu huwa l-ossiġnu tal-paċi

There seems to be no end in sight to the fighting and suffering in the war in Ukraine. Since February 24 of last year, hundreds of thousands have been killed and millions more have been forced to flee from their homes.

As the war drags on, we risk giving up on peace and becoming numb to the suffering of victims. While Ukraine has the right to defend its sovereignty and firmly reject Russian aggression with the necessary aid, everything must be done so that the inevitability of war gives way to paths of dialogue that lead to a just peace… Kompli aqra »

Il-qawwa tal-ospitalità

On the 5th of March, 2002, 250 asylum seekers drifted into Xlendi Bay, Gozo. Their arrival marked what would later be considered as the first major disembarkation of asylum seekers on Maltese shores. Since then, the issue of migration has practically never disappeared from our socio-political agenda. Among friends and colleagues, the pros and cons of welcoming people in a multicultural society are discussed. Come election time, the success or otherwise of our “integration” programmes is debated… Kompli aqra »

Il-verità u l-ġustizzja: Iż-żewġ pilastri tal-ġustizzja wara l-gwerra

On the occasion of Human Rights Day on 10 December 2022 the European Conference of Justice and Peace Commissions wishes to offer some reflections on post-war justice (ius post bellum).

For many months now, the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine has been raging. It is contrary to international law. Out of great concern for the people suffering from this brutal war, the European Conference of Justitia et Pax Commissions (Justice and Peace Europe) has repeatedly spoken out on this brutal war1, not only condemning the Russian aggression, war crimes and the countless violations of human rights, but also calling on political leaders to find a solution to this conflict… Kompli aqra »

Il-logħba mhux daqstant sabiħa

Minn mindu l-FIFA għażlet lill-Qatar biex jospita t-Tazza tad-Dinja tal-2022, dan ir-Renju tal-Golf spiċċa taħt skrutinju kritiku kostanti. Dik li kellha tkun ċelebrazzjoni ta’ talent, diversità u kompetizzjoni sportiva, qed tittrasforma ruħha f’kampjonat mittiefes minn stejjer ta’ sfruttament, transazzjonijiet mhux ċari, u preġudizzju. F’dan il-każ, l-eżerċizzju ta’ “sportswashing”, li bih l-isponsors korporattivi u n-nazzjonijiet ospitanti jfittxu li jtejbu r-reputazzjoni tagħhom billi jisfruttaw l-emozzjonijiet qawwija evokati mill-avvenimenti sportivi, ma jidhirx li sejjer kif mistenni… Kompli aqra »

Faqar u nies bla saqaf fuq rashom

“Collaboration is increasingly being seen as an important factor in the work of health and social professionals.” (Ambrose-Miller & Ashcroft, 2016, pp.101)

Poverty is one of the most significant social determinants of health and mental health, intersecting with all other determinants, including education, local social and community conditions, race/ethnicity, gender, immigration status, health and access to health care, as well as the living environment… Kompli aqra »

Aċċess mhux ugwali għall-lievi tal-poter

“The Maltese economy is managed by no more than ten people.” These were the words of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat when he testified in the public inquiry into the circumstances of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination. Many were those who brushed off this statement as a well-known fact which should not surprise anyone. However, this concentration of power in the hands of a few people raises some very serious issues regarding the type of influence they exercise over those who are called to govern for the benefit of the whole nation and the type of impact they have over the formulation of policies which should serve the common good and not that of the select few… Kompli aqra »

Stqarrija mill-Kummissjoni Ġustizzja u Paċi

Il-Kummissjoni Ġustizzja u Paċi tilqa’ b’sodisfazzjon l-offerta ta’ medjazzjoni bejn il-Bord tal-Kulleġġ St Albert the Great u s-sur Mario Mallia, li din il-ġimgħa tkeċċa mill-irwol tiegħu bħala surmast ta’ l-iskola.

Il-Kummissjoni tittama bis-sħiħ li, fl-interess tal-komunità edukattiva ta’ St Albert u fl-interess tal-qasam edukattiv kollu f’Malta u tal-Knisja lokali, din il-kwistjoni tiġi riżolta fil-futur qarib.

Mingħajr ma nidħlu fil-merti tal-każ, m’għandux jiġi sottovalutat it-taħwid u r-rabja li qed jesprimu għadd kbir ta’ nies ta’ rieda tajba b’reazzjoni kemm għat-tkeċċija tas-Sur Mario Mallia kif ukoll għall-mod kif ittieħdet deċiżjoni bħal din… Kompli aqra »

Rebħa jew telfa

Issa li, bil-mod il-mod, il-pajjiż qed imur lura għar-rutina tas-soltu wara l-Elezzjoni Ġenerali li saret is-Sibt li għadda, Malta tidher li tinsab f’xenarju familjari: nofs il-poplu qed jiċċelebra, u n-nofs l-ieħor jinsab f’luttu. Xi nies qed iċemplu lill-qraba u lill-ġirien biex jinkuhom. Oħrajn iċemplu biex jagħmlu kuraġġ lil xulxin. Ħafna ħadu r-ruħ, filwaqt li oħrajn qed jokorbu bl-uġigħ, bir-rabja u l-qtigħ il-qalb. Fi kliem ieħor, għal darb’oħra, il-partiġjaniżmu estrem jidher li għadu preżenti wara l-elezzjoni daqskemm kien preżenti fil-ġimgħa ta’ qabel l-elezzjoni… Kompli aqra »
